GREENSBORO - While the West All-Stars had two Gaston County players on the roster, only one was necessary to defeat the East 78-73 Monday at Greensboro Coliseum.
East Gaston's Cameron Sealey posted 15 points while playing a pivotal role in the West's success. Forestview's Jessica Capers suffered a knee injury prior to the game and was unable to participate in even the warm-up session.
"I was real upset I couldn't play, but I knew I had to be a team player and cheer them on," said Capers, The Gazette player of year from the 2007-08 season.
Sealey dominated during her play in the first quarter. The three time first-team All-Gazette player tabbed six points during her four minutes of play. She helped the West get out to a 19-16 lead before a laceration on her knee cut her time in the first frame.
"Playing with other all-stars, they get you the ball," said Sealey, who will play at Lenior-Rhyne next season. "It was a great opportunity to play and it was even more special to get the win."
The West enjoyed as much as a nine-point lead in the third quarter, with Sealey finishing the third with 13 points. But the East clawed back to within one late in the fourth before the West put them away for good with Sealey's fast break lay-up with 26 seconds remaining.
Sealey outdid her average of 14 points during her senior season while recording four steals and grabbing three rebounds.
It was the closest game in the tournament's history since 1996 when the East won 79-77 in overtime. Both teams were limited to only nine players after the East's Brittanni Billups did not show in Greensboro. Leading the East was Shamia Brown with 18 points while the West's Trumae Lucas, a Florida recruit, received MVP honors with her 21-point showing.
