The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders earned their third straight NCHSAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship and seventh overall with a 19-7 win against Charlotte Catholic on Friday evening at Durham County Memorial Stadium. The Crusaders are now 7-1 all-time in NCHSAA Championship Matches and 5-0 in Championship Matches against the Cougars. Charlotte Catholic is 2-7 in Championship Matches, having last won in 2014. The Crusaders struck first as Rocky Phelps scored the opening goal at the 7:08 mark in the first. The Cougars tied things up at 1-1 thanks to a goal from Mary Catherine Farley, but Ella Grimes put the Cardinal Gibbons in front 2-1, and the Crusaders never looked back. They led 10-3 at halftime and stretched that out to 15-5 by the end of the third. Cardinal Gibbons was led by Charlotte Jackson as she racked up six goals and four assists and was name Most Valuable Player for her efforts. Grimes added five goals and Caroline Mullahy, Jane Bailey Ward, Izzi Hammond and Phelps all had a pair of goals. For the Cougars, Farley and Kate Daniels each had three goals, and Zoe Pounder chipped in another. Cardinal Gibbons finished the year 20-4 and on a 16-game winning streak. Charlotte Catholic ended the 2024 campaign 19-8. The NCHSAA is committed to promoting and highlighting outstanding sportsmanship and has partnered with North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance to recognize one athlete from each team who has displayed the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the year. The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 4A Women’s Lacrosse Championship were Julia Nelson from Charlotte Catholic and Charlotte Jackson from Cardinal Gibbons.
