The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders capped an undefeated season on Saturday night in Reynolds Coliseum with a hard-fought 3-1 win against Marvin Ridge in the 4A Championship match. The Crusaders came out hot in the first set and rolled to a 25-11 win in the opener, but Marvin Ridge responded in the second set and tied things up with a 25-21 win. Cardinal Gibbons narrowly edged the Mavericks 26-24 in each of the next two sets to seal the win. The second set on Saturday was just the third dropped set all season for the Crusaders. Cardinal Gibbons was led by Mary Grace Gonyeau’s 20 kills and she added nine digs. Genevieve Harris had 55 assists, five kills, and ten digs in the game and was named the Most Valuable Player. Hailey Mueller added 12 kills and 15 digs and Charlotte Bell and Ameila Bell added 10 and 11 kills, respectively. For the Mavericks, Natalie Unkrich had a team-high 16 kills, and Ashley Murray added 13. Beckett Hammers had 26 digs, and Jillian Young racked up 27 assists. Gibbons was the only Eastern Regional Champion to win on Saturday and finished the season 22-0, earning sweeps in 19 of those contests. The Crusaders are now 12-1 in NCHSAA championship matches but this was their first title since 2020. Marvin Ridge finished the season 34-4, and Saturday marked their first loss – and first dropped set – since August 27. The Mavericks are now 1-1 in NCHSAA championship matches, having won the title in 2018.
