The Polk County Wolverines took down the Eastern Regional Champion Perquimans Pirates 25-15, 27-25, 25-12 on Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum to secure the program’s second straight NCHSAA championship. After controlling the first set, the Wolverines faced a stiffer challenge in the second set but ultimately held the Pirates at bay, paving the way for another dominating performance in the final set. Senior Morgan Yoder led the way for the Wolverines as she had a game-high 17 kills, an ace, nine digs and five blocks. She was named Most Valuable Player for her performance. Sophia Overholt added 13 kills and 13 digs and Charley Dusenbury tallied 38 assists. For the Pirates, Kaydee Hunter had a team-high 16 kills and added five digs. Morgan Byrum had a solid game as well as she had five kills and 15 digs. Madelyn Stallings recorded 24 assists. The Pirates finished the season 26-2 and are now 0-4 in championship matches. The Wolverines wrapped up the 2024 campaign 22-3 in spite of the fact that they went 19 days without a game due to Hurricane Helene. Polk County won the final 13 games that it played this year and did not drop a single set in the playoffs. The NCHSAA is committed to recognizing outstanding sportsmanship in each of our State Championship events. The Association has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to award a pair of Sportsmanship Awards at each championship event, recognizing players who have demonstrated the ideals of outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2024 season. The winners of the 1A Volleyball NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards were Catherine Howell from Perquimans and Kylie Lewis from Polk County.
