Notes

The Green Level Gators battled the rain and the Lake Norman Wildcats on Friday night at Durham County Memorial Stadium and ended the 2024 season as NCHSAA 4A Men’s Lacrosse Champions. The win is the first lacrosse championship for Green Level and comes in the school’s first trip to the championship match. The Gators built an early lead, going up 3-1 in the first and ultimately leading 8-5 going into the fourth quarter. Lake Norman rallied in the fourth and outscored Green Level 5-2, including a run of four unanswered goals, to force the extra frame. The game-tying goal from Haydon Chichon came with just four seconds left on the clock. In overtime, Austin Hryn scored the game-winner with an assist from Gus Maggio with 2:31 left on the clock. The goal was Hryn’s fourth in the game, and he was named the Most Valuable Player for the contest. Jackson Spells added two goals and two assists for the Gators. For the Wildcats, Chichon scored three goals, as did Cannon Wiggington and Brandon DeBarardinis. The championship match was a rematch of the tight, early-season nonconference match, which the Gators won 8-7 on March 9. The Gators finished the season 22-2, and Lake Norman ended the year 18-6. Lake Norman is now 2-4 in championship matches. The NCHSAA is committed to promoting and highlighting outstanding sportsmanship and has partnered with North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance to recognize one athlete from each team who has displayed the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the year. The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 4A Men’s Lacrosse Championship were Shaun Wilson from Lake Norman and AJ. Ahart from Green Level.
