The North Mecklenburg Vikings survived a clash with the New Hanover Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum to defend their 4A Men’s Basketball Championship. North Mecklenburg now has four state championships (including a Co-Championship from the 2020 COVID season) and two in a row. The Wildcats came out strong early, taking a 31-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. By the first basket of the fourth quarter, North Mecklenburg had tied things up and eventually built up a lead that grew to be as big as seven. New Hanover pulled back to within three and fired a 3-pointer in the final seconds that missed and sealed the win for North Mecklenburg. Rodmik Allen led the charge for the Eastern Champions as he finished the game with 14 points, five assists, five rebounds, and four steals. He was named the East Most Outstanding Player for his performance. Kellum Brown added 13 points for the Wildcats, and C.J. Kournegay chipped in with 10. For the Vikings, Chadlyn Traylor poured in 22 points and had four rebounds and four assists on his way to winning the West Most Outstanding Player. Carson Evans finished the game with 24 points and three rebounds and was given the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player Award for the Championship. The Association has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to award a pair of Sportsmanship Awards at each championship event, recognizing players who have demonstrated the ideals of outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2024-25 season. The winners of the 4A Men’s Basketball NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards were Cam Angel from New Hanover and Carson Evans from North Mecklenburg.
