Notes
The Wilson Prep Academy Tigers defended the NCHSAA 1A Men’s Championship in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum with a 65-63 win over Corvian Community. Corvian’s Adrian Scott made one of two free throws with four seconds left in the fourth quarter to take a 63-62 lead. On the ensuing play, Leslie Minter fired off a would-be buzzer-beating 3-pointer that missed the mark, but he was fouled on the play and made all three free throws to take back the lead. The Cardinals had .6 seconds left and found a look, but it bounced off the rim as the horn sounded. Wilson Prep’s Ben Ferguson, who finished with 32 points and seven rebounds, was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player for the game. Brandon Anderson, who had nine points and five rebounds, was named the West Most Outstanding Player. Corvian Community’s Jack Hudson was named the East Most Outstanding Player for his eight-point, 17-rebound performance. R.J. Moore led the Cardinals with 20 points in the game. The win gives Wilson Prep its third state title, as they won last season and in 2021. The Tigers finished the 23-24 campaign 27-5. The Cardinals finished the year 27-4. The NCHSAA is committed to promoting and highlighting outstanding sportsmanship and has partnered with North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance to recognize one athlete from each team who has displayed the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the year. The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 1A Men’s Basketball Championship were Malachi McCutcheon from Corvian Community and Xavier Williams from Wilson Prep.
