The North Mecklenburg Vikings topped the New Hanover Wildcats 57-47 on Saturday night at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum to claim their third NCHSAA Men’s Basketball State Championship. The Vikings led for 31 and a half of the 32 minutes in the game and were powered by Isaiah Evans, who played all 32 minutes. Evans led all scorers with 23 points and he added eight rebounds. He was named the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player for his performance on the night. Chadlyn Traylor added 15 points on seven shots and was named the Most Outstanding Player for the West. For the Wildcats, Rodmik Allen was named the Most Outstanding Player for the East as he socred 13 points and had two rebounds and two steals. Parker Crittenden led New Hanover in scoring with 14 and Nolan Billings added 10 and eight boards. The Vikings finished the season 30-3 and won their third title but only the second Championship Game as their last title came in the Covid-19 shortened playoffs. The Regionals had been completed but not Championship Game was held and Co-Champs were declared. New Hanover finished the year 32-1. The NCHSAA is committed to promoting and highlighting outstanding sportsmanship and has partnered with North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance to recognize one athlete from each team who has displayed the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the year.
