The Lake Norman Charter Knights won an epic battle with the Terry Sanford Bulldogs 5-4 to win the school’s first NCHSAA 3A Women’s Dual Team Tennis Championship and fourth overall. Thanks to a valiant effort in the No. 6 singles spot from Kate Champion, who won her match with Lauren Ruppe 4-6, 7-6 [7-2][10-3], the championship match was tied 3-3 after the singles portion. In the doubles portion of the match, Terry Sanford’s #1 doubles team, the reigning NCHSAA 3A Doubles Champions, won a rematch of the semifinals last week in the individual championships with Anslee Falls and Eleina Moon, to take the lead. But Luci Falls and Moriah Harris won their doubles match 10-7 to put all the pressure on the final doubles match. Champion again answered the bell, with teammate Aileen Huynh, they won in a tiebreak 11-10 [7-3]. Falls, who also won her singles match 6-3, 6-4, was named MVP. The Knights finished the season 24-0 while the Bulldogs ended up 18-1. The NCHSAA is committed to recognizing outstanding sportsmanship in each of our State Championship events. The Association has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to award a pair of Sportsmanship Awards at each championship event, recognizing players who have demonstrated the ideals of outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2023 season.
